THE STORY

Over the weekend, a US drone strike killed the leader of the Afghan Taliban.

EXPLAIN.

The strike targeted Mullah Mansour, who was apparently in a remote area of Pakistan. The US has been helping Afghanistan in the fight against the Taliban for years, and recently has been trying to find a way for the terror group and the government there to agree on a peace deal.

ANYTHING ELSE?

Yes. Apparently the US didn’t text Pakistani leadership about the attack until after it happened. Spoiler: Pakistan’s not happy about it, and it’s giving the country deja vu to that time the US killed Osama bin Laden and didn’t give Pakistan the heads up. Meanwhile, the US is a little worried that Pakistan isn’t working hard enough to fight against the Taliban. So the feeling is mutual.

theSKIMM

Mansour was one of the biggest obstacles to peace talks between the Afghan gov. and the Taliban. This strike could mean one less roadblock to peace, and one more step towards the US being able to back away further from its role in Afghanistan.

1. drone:
2. remote area:
3. deja vu:
5. mutual:
6. obstacles:障礙
7. roadblock :
