THE STORY

Yesterday, a British lawmaker was attacked and killed while leaving a meeting with voters in northern England. Police have arrested a suspect.

昨天，一位英國的國會議員在離開拜訪北英格蘭選區時遭到襲擊殺害。警察已逮捕嫌犯。

WHAT HAPPENED?

Jo Cox - a 41-year-old politician, and mother of two young kids - was shot and stabbed multiple times by a man who approached her on the street. He reportedly shouted “Britain first” during the assault. Leading many to think that the motive had to do with next week’s hugely important vote on whether Britain should break up with the EU.

All week, you've been hearing about the sexual assault case involving a former Stanford student. Yesterday, a statement he made in court was released.

Earlier this year, former Stanford University swimmer Brock Turner was convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman in early 2015. The max prison sentence for those charges is 14 years. The judge gave Turner six months, saying a longer sentence might have a "severe impact" on him.

Yesterday, Iraqi forces - supported by US airstrikes - moved in on ISIS in the city of Fallujah.

WHY DO I CARE?

Because Fallujah is a (major) key city close to Baghdad, Iraq’s capital. It was the first important city to fall to ISIS, and the group is believed to have plotted multiple suicide bombings in Baghdad from Fallujah. Not good, especially since at least 20 people were killed in Baghdad yesterday in bombings claimed by ISIS.

Over the weekend, a US drone strike killed the leader of the Afghan Taliban.

EXPLAIN.

The strike targeted Mullah Mansour, who was apparently in a remote area of Pakistan. The US has been helping Afghanistan in the fight against the Taliban for years, and recently has been trying to find a way for the terror group and the government there to agree on a peace deal.
