THE STORY
Yesterday, Iraqi forces - supported by US airstrikes - moved in on ISIS in the city of Fallujah.
WHY DO I CARE?
Because Fallujah is a (major) key city close to Baghdad, Iraq’s capital. It was the first important city to fall to ISIS, and the group is believed to have plotted multiple suicide bombings in Baghdad from Fallujah. Not good, especially since at least 20 people were killed in Baghdad yesterday in bombings claimed by ISIS.
ANYTHING ELSE?
Fallujah’s complicated because it’s a predominantly Sunni city. Reminder: the majority of Iraq is Shiite, while ISIS is Sunni-led. And those two branches of Islam are basically like the Bayside Tigers and Valley High of the Mideast. Shiite militias (led by Iran) have been involved in the effort to take back Fallujah from ISIS. The US - while it wants ISIS gone - also doesn’t want to stir up resentment and cause Fallujah’s Sunni population to fight back against the Shiite militias. Iraq, meet hard place.
theSKIMM
If the Iraqi gov. manages to say ‘backsies’ to Fallujah, it would be a huge win in a fight that’s been going on for two years now. But no matter what happens with ISIS, this fight could raise tensions between rival groups…in a country that’s already very tense.
