You made it

THE STORY

Yesterday, a British lawmaker was attacked and killed while leaving a meeting with voters in northern England. Police have arrested a suspect.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Jo Cox - a 41-year-old politician, and mother of two young kids - was shot and stabbed multiple times by a man who approached her on the street. He reportedly shouted “Britain first” during the assault. Leading many to think that the motive had to do with next week’s hugely important vote on whether Britain should break up with the EU.

WAIT...BACK UP.

The UK is deciding whether to stay and make it work with the EU, or leave…aka Brexit. For years, these two have been bickering about things like the migrant and refugee crisis, and the sagging EU economy. The ‘all the single ladies’ side says the UK will be better off alone. But the  ‘baby please don’t go’  side says the UK needs the EU for things like trade and security. It’s looking like the vote will be close, and the campaign has gotten pretty heated recently. Until yesterday.

WHAT’S THE LATEST?

All Brexit campaigning has been suspended around the country. Cox was on team ‘let’s stay together,’ and police are investigating whether politics motivated her attacker.

theSKIMM

This is the first attack on a British lawmaker in decades. Officials don’t think it was tied to terrorism abroad, but are still considering domestic terrorism. Yesterday, her husband said she would have wanted the country to “unite to fight against the hatred that killed her.”
